Sodium Hypochlorite 12% (Industrial Bleach) is commonly referred to as chlorine and is used for the disinfection of drinking water. A concentration equivalent to about 1 liter of chlorine per 10,000 liters of water is used. The exact amount required depends on the age of the chlorine, water chemistry, temperature, contact time, and presence or absence of sediment.
Industrial Bleach leaves the factory at 12% to 15% strength. It has a relatively short shelf life, losing about 1% of its concentrated strength per month. Many plants will reorder sodium hypochlorite every three months to balance shipping costs and chemical strength.
Sodium hypochlorite is available in 20 liter pails, 114 liter small drum and 210 liter drum.
