Key Features: Precision and Simplicity

This Minikit is for testing Total Alkalinity. It is based on a tablet count method. Total
Alkalinity, also known as Alkalinity M, is the acid demand of the water to the colour
change of the methyl orange indicator (pH 4.3). Chemically it represents the alkalinity
mainly from the presence of hydroxides, carbonates and bicarbonates in the water.

 Testing Procedure:

Range 20 –500 mg/L CaCO3 Sample volume 50 mL

Range 10 –250 mg/L CaCO3 Sample volume 100 mL

1. Select the sample size 50 mL or 100 mL appropriate to the range under test. Rinse
the container with the sample and take a sample of the correct size in it.
2. Add one Total Alkalinity tablet, stopper the container and shake the container until
the tablet disintegrates. Continue adding Total Alkalinity tablets one at a time in this
manner until the colour of the solution changes from YELLOW to RED.
3. Note the number of tablets used until the colour of the solution changed and calculate
the result from the formula below appropriate to the sample volume taken:

Sample volume 50 mL:
Total Alkalinity (mg/L CaCO 3) = (No. of Tablets x 40) - 20

Sample volume 100 mL:
Total Alkalinity (mg/L CaCO 3) = (No. of Tablets x 20) - 1
