Why Indirect-Fired? The Safety and Quality Difference
Direct-fired heaters dump combustion products, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, water vapor, and unburnt fuel directly into the heated airstream. They're cheaper to manufacture and acceptable for high-ventilation outdoor or open-shell applications, but they're not suitable for occupied indoor spaces, concrete curing, or finishing work where moisture and exhaust contamination cause real damage.
Indirect-fired heaters separate combustion from the airstream. Fuel burns inside a sealed combustion chamber, heat transfers through a stainless steel heat exchanger, and a blower pushes only the warmed, clean air into the space. Combustion gases vent outside through a flue.
The result: fume-free, dry, breathable air rated for enclosed work areas, occupied spaces, concrete curing (where moisture would compromise the cure), paint and coating drying (where exhaust would contaminate the finish), and worker comfort in tents and shelters. Design directs every Frost Fighter heater.
The IDH and IDF series include stainless steel multi-pass heat exchangers and fully insulated jackets to maintain efficiency in sub-zero conditions.

Always select a heater with 20–30% reserve power for extreme cold. Use the Cleanflow BTU Calculator to size your space precisely.
Choosing the Right Frost Fighter for Your Jobsite
Five buyer scenarios cover most Frost Fighter purchases. Use this guide to match the application to the right model and BTU range:
Concrete curing, masonry, and finishing work
Indirect-fired heat is critical here. Direct-fired exhaust would introduce moisture and contaminants that compromise the cure or finish. Plan for 50–75 BTU per sq. ft. of slab or enclosure. The IDF350 handles most pour and cure jobs up to roughly 4,500–7,000 sq. ft.; for larger pours or longer winter cures, step up to the IDH400QR or IDH500QR. The stainless steel heat exchanger and insulated jacket on these models maintain consistent output through extended cure cycles.
General construction and winter jobsites
Plan for 40–60 BTU per sq.ft. for typical enclosed jobsites. The IDH200QR (170,000 BTU/h, <74 dB) covers smaller framing, finishing, or partition zones up to ~4,250 sq.ft. The IDF500 (420,000 BTU/h, dual-fuel, 6-ply pneumatic tires) is the workhorse for active construction sites that need rugged transport and EZ Ball-Valve fuel switchover. Up to 50 ft of ducting reaches into multiple work zones from a single unit.
Restoration, drying, and warehouse heating
Restoration projects need clean dry heat without exhaust contamination. Indirect-fired is the only option. For 5,000–10,000 sq.ft. warehouse and facility recovery, the IDH400QR delivers 81% thermal efficiency and ultra-quiet <62 dB operation important when work continues around the heater. Long duct runs (up to 100 ft supply, 50 ft return) allow you to place the heater outside the affected space and direct heat precisely to drying zones.
Mining, oil, and pipeline projects
Remote sites with bulk diesel storage, extreme cold, and demanding runtime call for the highest-output Frost Fighter models. The IHS700P pairs 700,000 BTU/h and 4,600 CFM with a 175-gallon tank for up to 35 hours of unattended runtime, EZ Burner Switch-Out for fuel flexibility, and optional 460V/575V/600V configurations for site power. For applications needing higher static pressure (~6.0" w.c.) and longer duct runs, the IHS700H delivers 8,000 CFM airflow on the same 700,000 BTU output.
Tent and event heating
Indoor air quality and noise are non-negotiable for occupied event spaces. The IDH400QR and IDH500QR both run under 62 dB and deliver fume-free indirect heat through long duct runs. This keeps the heater outside the tent and directs clean warm air inside. Plan for 25–30 BTU per sq.ft. for well-sealed event tents, more for open or drafty venues.

Fuel Selection: Oil/Diesel, LP/NG, or Dual-Fuel?
Most Frost Fighter models are configured for either Oil/Diesel or LP/NG, with several offering dual-fuel flexibility. Match the fuel option to your jobsite reality:
Choose Oil/Diesel when...
...your site already has bulk fuel storage, your equipment is diesel-fueled, runtime matters more than emissions, or you're working remote sites where propane delivery is unreliable. Oil/Diesel models typically deliver higher BTU output on the same chassis (e.g., the IDH500QR puts out 500,000 BTU on Oil/Diesel vs. 420,000 BTU on LP/NG) and integrated fuel tanks (sized 42 to 175 gallons depending on model) provide multi-shift unattended runtime.
Choose LP/NG when...
...you're working in urban or suburban sites with natural gas service available, you need cleaner combustion for indoor occupied spaces, or you're swapping propane cylinders for fast fuel changes (no fuel-tank fill, no diesel handling). LP/NG models route external fuel supply, so the chassis is lighter and easier to position. Best for events, restoration, facility heating near gas mains.
Choose dual-fuel when...
...fuel availability or pricing fluctuates between projects, or you're a rental fleet operator who needs operational flexibility for resale value. The IDF350 and IDF500 use the EZ Ball-Valve switchover to transition between LP/NG and Oil/Diesel without tools. The IHS700P uses the EZ Burner Switch-Out Kit for pre-configured field conversion. Higher upfront cost, but flexibility pays back across multi-project life.
