Description
Slow-Release Aluminum Sulfate Tablets for Wastewater & Stormwater Treatment
Product Overview
Phos-4-Fade® phosphorus removal tablets provide a consistent and effective method for reducing phosphorus levels in wastewater, stormwater, and process water. Containing 93% aluminum sulfate, these tablets are the safest and preferred method of choice for phosphorus removal in municipal, industrial, and residential treatment systems.
They directly address the root cause of harmful algae blooms by eliminating phosphorus from the food chain before it reaches sensitive waterways.
Why Phosphorus Removal Matters
Excess phosphorus in water bodies is a primary contributor to environmental degradation. When nutrient-rich effluent enters waterways, it often triggers rapid algae growth. These harmful algae blooms deplete oxygen levels, damage aquatic ecosystems, and degrade water quality. By using Phos-4-Fade®, facility operators can proactively lower phosphorus levels to protect local water resources.
Reducing phosphorus is also essential for regulatory compliance. Many treatment facilities face strict limits on nutrient discharge to improve effluent quality. Phos-4-Fade® serves as an integral part of a nutrient reduction program, helping systems meet stringent environmental standards without the complexity of liquid chemical dosing systems.
How Phos-4-Fade® Works
Aluminum Sulfate Chemistry
Each tablet is formulated with 93% aluminum sulfate (Al₂(SO₄)₃) as the active ingredient. As the tablet dissolves, it releases this coagulant into the treatment stream. The aluminum sulfate reacts chemically with phosphorus (in the form of phosphate) present in the water.
Coagulation and Binding
The released coagulant bonds with phosphates to form insoluble particles. This chemical reaction effectively neutralizes the phosphorus, preventing it from acting as a fertilizer for algae.
Settling Mechanism
Once the aluminum and phosphorus combine, the resulting particles settle to the bottom of the treatment tank or lagoon. This sediment remains contained within the system until it is removed during routine disposal, ensuring the effluent leaving the tank is significantly lower in phosphorus content.
Flow-Proportional Dosing
Phos-4-Fade® tablets are engineered to release aluminum sulfate in direct proportion to the velocity of the incoming flow. This means the dosage automatically adjusts based on the volume of water entering the system, providing consistent treatment even during variable flow conditions.
Integration Before Chlorine Contact
For maximum effectiveness, these tablets should be incorporated into the treatment process in conjunction with clarification, but before a chlorine contact tank. If using a multi-tube feeder, they can be used simultaneously with disinfection steps, provided they are in separate feed tubes.
Performance Advantages
- Concentrated 93% aluminum sulfate formula ensures potent phosphorus reduction.
- Slow, consistent dissolution provides reliable, long-term treatment without frequent reloading.
- Chemical release automatically adjusts to incoming flow velocity for optimal dosage control.
- Minimizes sludge generation compared to liquid or granular alternatives that often overdose.
- Eliminates the need for complex chemical mixing or liquid solution preparation.
- Offers more accurate dosing than liquid or granular alum, preventing chemical waste.
- Provides a cost-effective long-term treatment solution for nutrient reduction compliance.
Applications & System Compatibility
Phos-4-Fade® is versatile and suitable for a wide range of water treatment scenarios:
- Wastewater treatment plants: Improves effluent quality and meets discharge permits.
- Stormwater systems: Treats runoff to prevent nutrient loading in local waterways.
- Process water systems: Manages phosphorus in industrial water outputs.
- Agricultural runoff control: Mitigates fertilizer impact from surrounding land.
- Food processing facilities: Handles nutrient-rich waste streams effectively.
- Vacation & residential systems: Works efficiently in low, intermittent, or variable flow conditions common in homes and retreats.
- Feeder Compatibility: Compatible with all major gravity or pressure-rated tablet feeders.

Installation & Feed Tube Loading
Placement Within Treatment Process
Phos-4-Fade® should be placed in the treatment stream after clarification, but before the final discharge. If a chlorine contact tank is used, the tablets should be applied before it is used. The chlorine contact tank can then serve as a mixing chamber for the coagulation process.
Tube Loading Instructions
- Remove the feed tube from the dispenser housing and remove the protective cap.
- Rinse the tube and cap with fresh water to remove any residue. Do not use a tube that contains remnants of other chemicals.
- Hold the tube slotted end up at a 45° angle.
- Slide Phos-4-Fade® tablets into the tube one at a time, ensuring they lie flat.
- Replace the cap securely and return the tube to the housing with the slotted end down.
- Ensure the tube rests evenly on the floor of the housing.
Multi-Tube Feeder Guidance
If using a Bio-Dynamic® tablet feeder with multiple tubes, consult the manufacturer’s instructions for correct tube placement.
Simultaneous Chlorination Compatibility
You can use Phos-4-Fade® in the same feeder as Bio-Sanitizer® disinfecting tablets, but they must be in separate feed tubes. Never mix different types of tablets within the same tube. If a feed tube is not charged with chlorine tablets, the tube closest to the outlet may be filled with Phos-4-Fade® tablets.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can Phos-4-Fade® be used with chlorine tablets?
Yes, but they must be kept in separate feed tubes. Direct contact between Phos-4-Fade® tablets and oxidizing agents such as chlorine tablets is dangerous and can cause a chemical reaction.
Is Phos-4-Fade® safe for potable water treatment?
No. Phos-4-Fade® is formulated for wastewater, stormwater, and process water treatment. It should not be used to treat water intended for human consumption.
Does Phos-4-Fade® work at low or intermittent flow rates?
Yes. The tablets are engineered to release aluminum sulfate proportionally to incoming flow velocity, allowing effective treatment during low, variable, and intermittent flow conditions.
How does Phos-4-Fade® compare to ferric chloride or granular alum?
Phos-4-Fade® provides controlled, flow-proportional dosing that reduces the risk of overdosing commonly associated with liquid ferric chloride or granular alum. This helps minimize excess sludge generation and improves chemical efficiency.
What pH range is required for effective treatment?
For optimal phosphorus removal performance, the water being treated should be at or near a neutral pH. Extreme pH conditions may reduce coagulation efficiency.
Can these tablets be used in any tablet feeder?
Phos-4-Fade® tablets are compatible with most major gravity-fed and pressure-rated tablet feeders. Performance is often optimized when used in manufacturer-recommended multi-tube feeder systems.
What safety precautions should be followed when handling the tablets?
Wear rubber gloves and eye protection such as safety goggles or a face shield when handling tablets or servicing feed tubes. Avoid inhaling dust and prevent contact with incompatible chemicals.
How should Phos-4-Fade® tablets be stored?
Store tablets in their original, tightly sealed container in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area. Protect from moisture, direct sunlight, and contamination.
