Description

Preset No-Hub Torque Wrenches, Click Release, 5/16 and 3/8 in. Hex

No-Hub cast iron soil pipe couplings need specific torque to seal without cracking the pipe or deforming the gasket. These two preset torque wrenches click at the factory-set value, then stop. The TW516 is a no-hub torque wrench that delivers 60 in-lb for standard couplings with 5/16 in. hex screws. The TW38 delivers 80 in-lb for heavy-duty couplings with 3/8 in. hex screws.

What's Included

Each model is sold separately.

  • TW516 (02298): 1x ratcheting torque wrench, 5/16 in. hex, preset to 60 in-lb
  • TW38 (02300): 1x ratcheting torque wrench, 3/8 in. hex, preset to 80 in-lb

Key Features

  • Factory-sealed constant torque, click release at 60 or 80 in-lb: The wrench clicks audibly when the preset value is reached, then the ratchet disengages to prevent overtightening.
  • Ratcheting T-handle, no wrench removal between turns: Fast tightening gets a new bite on each stroke without lifting the no-hub coupling wrench off the screw.
  • Reversing collar, one-hand bolt loosening: Pull the collar toward the handle to switch from tightening to loosening without a second tool.
  • Zinc body, steel internals, 0.9 lbs: Light enough for a tool belt. The torque value is stamped on the handle for identification at a glance.
  • Lubricated for life, no field calibration: The factory-sealed mechanism needs no maintenance. Handle end washers keep the torque setting locked.

REED RATCHETING T-HANDLE TORQUE WRENCHES - Key Features & Benefits

How to Use a No-Hub Torque Wrench

  1. Match the no-hub torque wrench to the coupling. Standard No-Hub couplings with 5/16 in. hex clamp screws need the TW516 (60 in-lb). Heavy-duty couplings with 3/8 in. hex clamp screws need the TW38 (80 in-lb).
  2. Place the hex end on the clamp screw. Ratchet clockwise until the wrench clicks. The click signals that the preset torque has been reached. Stop turning.
  3. To loosen a bolt, align the flanges of the reversing collar with the handle, grasp the collar with two fingers, and pull it toward the handle. Rotate the collar slightly counterclockwise to engage the pin in the slots. The collar locks the shaft to the handle and allows loosening.

No-Hub couplings are normally installed using a torque wrench. A cast iron soil pipe torque wrench matched to the correct hex size removes the guesswork from every joint.

REED RATCHETING T-HANDLE TORQUE WRENCHES - HOW IT WORKS

Applications

  • Commercial plumbing contractors use a cast iron soil pipe torque wrench to set No-Hub clamps to spec on multi-story drain, waste, and vent risers.
  • Plumbing service crews carry a soil pipe torque wrench for coupling repairs on existing cast iron drainage systems.
  • Facility maintenance departments keep a no-hub coupling wrench on hand for emergency joint repairs in hospitals, schools, and commercial buildings.
  • Plumbing inspectors carry a plumbing torque wrench to spot-check clamp tightness during rough-in and final inspections.
  • Mechanical contractors use a no-hub torque wrench to meet coupling manufacturer torque specifications on commercial and institutional drainage projects.

Frequently Asked Questions

What torque for no-hub coupling?

Standard No-Hub couplings with 5/16 in. hex screws require 60 in-lb. Heavy-duty couplings and sizes 12 in. and larger with 3/8 in. hex screws require 80 in-lb. These values come from coupling manufacturer installation guides published by Fernco, AB&I Foundry, MIFAB, and Charlotte Pipe.

How to use a no-hub torque wrench?

Place the hex end on the clamp screw and ratchet clockwise until the wrench clicks. The click signals that preset torque has been reached. Stop turning. To loosen, pull the reversing collar toward the handle and rotate counterclockwise to engage the locking pin.

What is a preset torque wrench?

A preset torque wrench is factory-set to a fixed value and cannot be adjusted in the field. It clicks when that value is reached, then the ratchet releases. This removes the need for a calibrated adjustable wrench on No-Hub clamp work. Both the TW516 and TW38 are preset.

RIDGID vs Reed torque wrench: what is the difference?

Both click at the same torque values (60 and 80 in-lb) and fit the same hex sizes. The Reed torque wrench has a zinc body with steel internals. The RIDGID 902 and 904 use alloy steel. Both cover the same coupling types. Choose based on dealer availability.

What is the best torque wrench for cast iron soil pipe?

For No-Hub couplings, a preset plumbing torque wrench matched to the clamp screw hex size is the most practical choice. The TW516 handles standard couplings (5/16 in. hex, 60 in-lb). The TW38 handles heavy-duty couplings (3/8 in. hex, 80 in-lb). Both are sized for one-hand use in tight joist bays.
