Description

Tap and Install 3/4" to 1" Corporation Stops on Pressurized Water Mains, 4" to 48" Pipe

Product Overview

When a new water service connection has to go in, the main stays pressurized. Shutting down an active main for a single tap is not practical. The Reed TM1100 direct tapping machine drills, threads, and installs 3/4" or 1" corporation stops on pressurized water mains without interrupting service. This corporation stop tapping machine handles 4" to 48" cast iron, ductile iron, and C-900 PVC pipe.

Key Features

  • Star Feed System. The star feed mechanism controls how fast the drill tap advances into the pipe wall. This gives the operator precise control over cutting speed and prevents the tap from binding in the material.
  • Swing Check Valve. After the drill tap cuts threads, the swing check valve seals the chamber so the operator can swap the tap for a corporation insertion tool without shutting off the water. This valve resists clogging from chips and debris during pressurized water main tapping.
  • Chip Flushing Port. A 1/2-14 NPT plugged port on the chamber lets the operator flush metal chips during the tapping process. Flushing prevents chips from entering the water main and keeps the threads clean for a tight corporation stop seal.
  • Lightweight Aluminum Frames. The TM1100 unit weighs 40.4 lbs (21 kg) with hard anodized and powder epoxy painted aluminum frames. A pipe tapping machine this size has to be carried into trenches and positioned on the pipe by one or two crew members, so weight matters.
  • Manual or Power Drive Operation. The Reed TM1100 direct tapping machine accepts a 13/16" square drive shaft for manual ratchet operation or a power drive adapter (sold separately) for motorized tapping. Manual works anywhere; adding a power drive speeds up high-volume tapping jobs.

What's Included

The TM1100 ships in a rolling tool case with the following items:

  • TM1100 tapping machine
  • Adapter shank
  • Corporation insertion tools for 3/4" and 1" stops
  • Tapping compound
  • Wrenches
  • Operator's manual

Saddles, drill taps, chain extensions, and power drive adapters are sold separately. See "What You Need for Each Tap" below for the full Reed TM1100 accessories guide.

What You Need for Each Tap

To set up the Reed TM1100 direct tapping machine for a job, match three accessories to the pipe: a saddle, a drill tap, and a corporation stop.

Drill Taps

Model Item Code Use
DT75 04390 3/4" tap on metallic pipe (cast iron, ductile iron)
DT100 04391 1" tap on metallic pipe (cast iron, ductile iron)
DTP75 04396 3/4" tap on C-900 PVC pipe
DTP100 04397 1" tap on C-900 PVC pipe

Saddles by Pipe Size

Each pipe diameter requires its own saddle. The following sizes are available for the TM1100: 4", 6", 8", 10", 12", 16", 18", 20", 24", 30"-36", 42", and 48".

Chain Extensions for Large Pipe

The base chain fits pipes up to 16" diameter. For larger pipes, add chain extensions and a clevis:

  • Up to 32" diameter: 1 chain extension + 1 clevis
  • Up to 48" diameter: 2 chain extensions

For crews using the TM1100 as their primary tapping machine for water service connections, keeping a set of the most common saddles and both metallic drill taps on the truck covers the majority of residential taps.

Applications

  • Installing 3/4" or 1" corporation stops for new residential water service connections using a corporation stop tapping machine that works on pressurized mains
  • Commercial and institutional water service taps on cast iron, ductile iron, or C-900 PVC distribution mains from 4" to 48"
  • Municipal water system expansion where crews use a water main tapping machine to extend service to new developments without shutting down existing supply
  • Fire hydrant lateral connections and water sampling points on distribution mains, where a single pipe tapping machine handles multiple pipe materials and sizes
  • Utility contractors performing pressurized water main tapping on multiple connections per day with a tapping machine for water service installations

Frequently Asked Questions

How does a direct tapping machine work?

A direct tapping machine uses a drill tap that simultaneously drills a hole and cuts threads in the pipe wall while the main stays under pressure. After threading, the operator removes the drill tap and inserts a corporation stop through the same chamber without releasing pressure.

What is a corporation stop?

A corporation stop is a valve installed directly into a water main through a tapped hole. It connects the main to a new service line and can be shut off independently without affecting the rest of the distribution system. The Reed TM1100 installs 3/4" and 1" corporation stops.

Can you tap a water main under pressure?

Yes. The Reed TM1100 direct tapping machine taps water mains at up to 90 psi operating pressure. For mains up to 250 psi, add a Mueller Power Clevis #H-10800 to the chamber. The swing check valve keeps the chamber sealed throughout the tapping process.

Reed TM1100 vs CDTM1100: Which one should I choose?

The TM1100 is a tapping-only machine that uses drill taps to thread and install corporation stops. The CDTM1100 adds a separate drilling boring bar for making unthreaded holes with hole saws. When comparing the Reed TM1100 vs CDTM1100, choose the TM1100 if your crews only install threaded corporation stops.

What Reed TM1100 accessories are needed for each tap?

Each tap requires a saddle matched to the pipe diameter, a drill tap matched to the corporation stop size and pipe material (metallic or PVC), and a corporation stop. For pipes over 16" diameter, add chain extensions and a clevis to reach around the pipe.
