Wrap-Around Polycarbonate Visor Rated ANSI Z87.1+ High Impact on a Vented Class C Shell | Jackson Safety

Product Overview

A face shield a worker has to carry is a face shield that stays in the truck. The Jackson Safety XS2-500 safety helmet is a hard hat with a flip-up visor: a wrap-around polycarbonate shield rated ANSI Z87.1+ for high impact, on an ABS shell with an EPP liner and a 4-point chin strap. The visor flips clear when the work does not need it.

One shell covers head sizes 6-1/2 to 8-1/2, so a crew order comes down to colour rather than head size. The ratings are ANSI Z89.1 Type 2 Class C and CSA Type 2 Class C, which means impact protection past the top of the head and no electrical protection. Part of the Jackson Safety line from SureWerx.

Key Features

  • Flip-up visor rated for high impact: The wrap-around polycarbonate visor carries ANSI Z87.1+, the high impact level of the eye and face protection standard. A high impact visor drops into place for grinding, chipping, or scaling and flips clear for a radio call or a clipboard. A hard hat with flip-up visor removes one piece of gear a worker has to remember to bring.
  • Head and eye protection rated separately: The shell carries ANSI Z89.1 Type 2 for impact past the top of the head. The visor carries ANSI Z87.1+ on its own. Neither rating covers the other, and that is what lets a safety helmet with eye protection stand in for a helmet plus a separate face shield rather than only looking like it does.
  • No brim, and a slotted shell: SureWerx classifies the shape as a safety helmet rather than a full brim or a cap style, which means no brim and no extended bill. The helmet clears a hatch rim, a ladder cage or a low header, and the shell is slotted for accessories at the sides. An industrial style safety helmet keeps the sightline open when a worker is looking up at a valve or a connection overhead.
  • Vented, and what that rules out: Shell venting moves heat out over a long outdoor shift. It also makes this a Class C safety helmet, which carries no electrical rating at all. If any worker on the crew may contact an energized conductor, order a non-vented Class E model instead of this one.

Applications

The Jackson Safety XS2-500 safety helmet suits work where debris comes at the face as often as it falls on the head, and where nothing on site is energized. A safety helmet with eye protection on board earns its place where the same task throws fragments upward and outward.

  • Grinding, chipping and cutting where fragments travel toward the face
  • Scaling, wire brushing and surface prep where material comes off toward the face
  • Overhead valve, connection and fitting work with the head tilted back, where a Type 2 safety helmet with visor keeps both hazards covered
  • Low-header and low-clearance access where a brim catches
  • Crews already carrying a separate face shield that goes missing

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a flip-up visor replace safety glasses?

Not on its own. The visor is rated ANSI Z87.1+ for high impact, which covers flying fragments, but many sites require primary eye protection worn underneath a face shield. Treat a hard hat with a flip-up visor as the shield rather than the glasses, and check your site hazard assessment.

What does ANSI Z87.1+ mean?

Z87.1 is the eye and face protection standard. The plus means the product passed the high impact test rather than the basic one. On this helmet, the rating applies to the visor, and it sits separately from the ANSI Z89.1 Type 2 rating covering the shell.

Is a polycarbonate visor chemical resistant?

No. A high impact visor is rated for impact only. Chemical splash carries its own marking under the eye and face protection standard and it is not listed on this product. For splash exposure, use dedicated splash protection instead.

Can you replace the visor on a safety helmet?

Jackson Safety lists visor kits for the XS2-500 as separate parts, along with the suspension, sweatband, chin strap and comfort pad. Availability is not confirmed at the time of writing, so contact Cleanflow before assuming a replacement visor is on the shelf.

What is the difference between a safety helmet and a hard hat?

The terms overlap and the industry uses both. In practice a safety helmet carries a chin strap and a foam liner so it stays on the head through a fall, where a traditional hard hat rests on a suspension alone. SureWerx classifies this model as a Type 2 safety helmet with visor.
