Description

High Capacity 20 Inch Coconut Shell Carbon Block Filter for Chlorine, Taste, and Odor Reduction

Overview

The Franklin FWCB 2.5" x 20" is a carbon block filter cartridge manufactured from 100% coconut shell activated carbon. It reduces dissolved chlorine, taste, and odor through chemical adsorption. The 20 inch length more than doubles the chlorine capacity of the 10 inch version and handles higher flow rates, so it fits whole house systems, commercial installations, and any application where longer service intervals matter. Two micron ratings: 0.5 (FWCB20P5) and 5 (FWCB2005). NSF 42 and NSF 61 certified for material safety requirements.

Key Features

  • 100% coconut shell activated carbon has more micropores per gram than coal-based carbon, providing higher chlorine adsorption capacity and fewer carbon fines during initial flush.
  • Carbon block construction eliminates channeling. Water passes through the full carbon matrix, not around loose granules, which gives more consistent chlorine reduction at the rated capacity.
  • NSF 42 and NSF 61 certified by NSF International for material safety requirements.
  • Low initial pressure drop (2 psid for 5µ, 3 psid for 0.5µ at 2 GPM) maintains flow without a booster pump.

Chlorine Reduction Capacity

Part # Micron Chlorine Capacity Initial ΔP
FWCB2005 5 >37,000 gal @ 2 GPM 2 psid @ 2 GPM
FWCB20P5 0.5 >45,000 gal @ 2 GPM 3 psid @ 2 GPM

10" vs 20" Carbon Block: When to Size Up

FWCB 10" (2.5" x 10") FWCB 20" (this product)
5µ chlorine capacity >17,000 gal @ 1 GPM >37,000 gal @ 2 GPM
0.5µ chlorine capacity >20,000 gal @ 1 GPM >45,000 gal @ 2 GPM
Rated test flow 1 GPM 2 GPM
Best for Under-sink, POU, countertop systems Whole house, commercial, higher-flow systems

The 20" cartridge more than doubles the chlorine capacity of the 10" and at twice the rated flow. For systems that run above 1 GPM or require longer intervals between cartridge changes, the 20" is the better fit. If your housing accepts 20" cartridges, there's no performance reason to use a 10".

Applications

  • Whole house chlorine and taste reduction
  • Pre-filtration and post-filtration for reverse osmosis systems
  • Commercial and light industrial water treatment
  • Food and beverage processing
  • Potable and process water purification

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between the 10" and 20" FWCB carbon blocks?

Same coconut shell carbon media and construction. The 20" more than doubles the chlorine capacity (37,000+ vs 17,000+ gallons for 5 micron) and is tested at 2 GPM instead of 1 GPM. Choose 20" for whole house systems, commercial installations, or any application requiring higher flow or longer cartridge life.

How many gallons can a 20 inch carbon block filter treat?

The FWCB2005 (5 micron) reduces chlorine for more than 37,000 gallons at 2 GPM. The FWCB20P5 (0.5 micron) reduces chlorine for more than 45,000 gallons at 2 GPM. Actual capacity depends on your water's chlorine level, flow rate, and temperature.

Should I choose the 0.5 or 5 micron carbon block?

5 micron is the standard choice for general chlorine, taste, and odor reduction. It has a lower pressure drop and works well in most residential and commercial systems. 0.5 micron provides finer particulate removal and higher chlorine capacity (45,000+ vs 37,000+ gallons), but with slightly more flow restriction. Choose 0.5 micron when you need tighter polishing, such as ahead of an RO membrane or in a food processing application.

How often should I replace this carbon block?

Replace based on your daily water usage and the cartridge's rated chlorine capacity. At 100 gallons per day, the 5 micron cartridge lasts roughly 12 months. At 500 gallons per day, roughly 2-3 months. Replace sooner if you notice a return of chlorine taste or odor, or when the pressure drop across the housing rises to 1.5 Bar (22 psi) above the clean-cartridge baseline.

Do carbon block filters remove bacteria?

No. Carbon block filters reduce dissolved chlorine, taste, and odor through chemical adsorption. They are not microbiological purifiers. Franklin recommends multiple disinfection barriers where raw water may contain pathogens.

What sediment filter should I use before a carbon block?

Install a string wound or spun poly sediment pre-filter upstream of the carbon block. Sediment clogs carbon blocks and shortens their service life. A 5 or 20 micron sediment cartridge catches sand, silt, and rust before they reach the carbon media.

Will this cartridge fit my housing?

The FWCB 20" fits standard 2.5" x 20" slimline filter housings used across the water treatment industry. Confirm your housing accepts 2.5" OD, 20" length cartridges before ordering.
