Is the 1/4" nipple actually 3 inches long? 

No. The 1/4" variant is 2-1/2" long, machined from Schedule 80 PVC pipe stock. All other sizes (1/2" through 2") are the full 3" length.

Can I use PVC nipples for compressed air lines? 

No. PVC is not rated for compressed air or gas. It can shatter under pneumatic pressure. Use metal or approved plastic systems for compressed air.

What thread sealant should I use? 

PTFE-based thread sealant compound, applied to the male thread only. Hand-tighten plus one to two turns with a strap wrench. Over-tightening cracks PVC.

What is the difference between molded and machined? 

Molded nipples are injection-molded as one piece. Machined nipples are cut and threaded from Schedule 80 pipe stock. Both meet ASTM D1785.
