Description

NSF 42 Certified Melt Blown Sediment Filter for Big Blue Whole House and Commercial Systems

Overview

The Franklin FWPS Series is tested and certified by NSF International to NSF/ANSI 42 for material safety requirements and compliant with FDA CFR Title 21 for food-contact applications. Three-layer micro-denier melt blown polypropylene with no glues, binders, or adhesives. Rated to 150°F (65°C). Four micron ratings: 1, 5, 20, 50. Fits all standard 10 x 4.5 Big Blue housings.

Key Features of 10 x 4.5 Big Blue Sediment Filter Cartridges

  • Three-layer gradient density captures coarse particles on the outer surface and progressively finer particles toward the center, which extends cartridge life and reduces the frequency of replacements.
  • Micro-denier melt blown fiber achieves finer fiber diameters than standard-denier media, which increases the number of particle contact points per layer and improves capture efficiency without increasing pressure drop.
  • 150°F (65°C) maximum operating temperature provides headroom above the 125°F limit of many commodity Big Blue cartridges and handles food processing and warm process water applications without approaching the cartridge's rated limit.
  • 100% polypropylene construction resists chemical attack, bacterial growth, and does not add taste, color, or odor to the water.
  • Thermal bonding fuses the fibers without binders or adhesives that could leach into the water or break down under pressure.
  • NSF 42 tested and certified by NSF International for material safety requirements. FDA CFR Title 21 compliant for direct food-contact applications.

How Three-Layer Gradient Density Works

A standard 10 x 4.5 sediment filter cartridge uses fibers of one size throughout the cartridge. All particles, coarse and fine, hit the same media at once. The fine pores clog first, and the cartridge loads from the inside out.

The FWPS cartridge stacks three distinct fiber layers. The outer layer uses the largest fibers, which catch sand, rust, and coarse sediment before they reach the interior. The middle layer captures mid-range particles. The innermost layer uses the finest micro-denier fibers and handles the smallest sediment at the rated micron level. Each layer does a portion of the work, so no single layer bears the full load.

The result is higher total dirt-holding capacity and a more gradual pressure rise over time. The cartridge loads evenly from outside to inside instead of plugging at one depth. Replacement intervals are longer under the same water conditions compared to single-density cartridges with the same micron rating.

Compatible Systems

The Franklin FWPS 10" x 4.5" fits any standard Big Blue housing that accepts a 4.5" OD, 10" length cartridge. This is an industry-standard form factor shared across manufacturers:

Housing Brand Compatible Models
Pentek / Pentair 150233, 150237, 153029, and all 10" Big Blue housings
Culligan HD-950 and Big Blue series
GE / GE Osmonics GXWH35F, GXWH30C, GXWH40L
Whirlpool WHKF-DWHBB
Ametek / US Filter All 10" Big Blue housings
Waterite All 10" Big Blue housings
iSpring WGB series Big Blue housings
Watts / Flomatic / Clack All standard 10" BB housings
Cleanflow Duplex / TriPlex Duplex 10" housing, TriPlex 10" housing

Replaces These Cartridges

Franklin Water Treatment Canada now produces the former Waterite and Excelpure filter lines. The FWPS Big Blue cartridge is the direct replacement for former Excelpure and Waterite melt blown polypropylene cartridges with identical performance and specifications.

Your Old Cartridge Franklin Replacement
Excelpure PP10B01 (1µ) Franklin FWPS10B01
Excelpure PP10B05 (5µ) Franklin FWPS10B05
Excelpure PP10B20 (20µ) Franklin FWPS10B20
Excelpure PP10B50 (50µ) Franklin FWPS10B50

If your system uses a different brand of 10 x 4.5 sediment filter cartridge in melt blown polypropylene, the FWPS is a direct physical replacement. Match the micron rating to your current cartridge.

Applications

  • Whole-house sediment filtration on municipal or well water
  • Pre-filtration upstream of RO membranes to extend membrane life
  • Commercial water treatment systems requiring NSF 42 documentation
  • Food and beverage processing under FDA CFR Title 21 requirements
  • Process water and chemical processing where polypropylene chemical resistance is needed
  • Electroplating rinse water filtration
  • Post-filtration for potable water polishing

Frequently Asked Questions

What does three-layer gradient density mean in a water filter?

The cartridge has three distinct fiber layers, each with a different diameter, arranged from coarsest on the outside to finest on the inside. This staged filtration loads the cartridge evenly rather than plugging at one depth. The practical benefit: longer service intervals under the same water conditions compared to a single-density cartridge at the same micron rating. Gradient density matters most in water with mixed particle sizes, such as well water with both coarse sand and fine silt.

How often should I replace a 10 x 4.5 sediment filter cartridge?

Replace when the pressure drop across the housing rises to 1.5 Bar (22 psi) above the clean-cartridge baseline. For most residential whole-house systems on municipal water, that is every 3 to 6 months. Well water with heavy sand or silt may require replacement every 1 to 3 months. Monitor the pressure gauge on your housing rather than relying on a calendar schedule alone.

Can I use this Franklin FWPS cartridge in a Pentek or Culligan Big Blue housing?

Yes. The FWPS 10" x 4.5" OD cartridge fits any standard Big Blue housing, including Pentek (150233, 150237, 153029), Culligan (HD-950), GE (GXWH35F, GXWH30C, GXWH40L), Whirlpool (WHKF-DWHBB), Ametek, iSpring WGB series, and Cleanflow Duplex and TriPlex housings. It is the same industry-standard form factor used across all Big Blue manufacturers.

Is this the same cartridge as the Excelpure PP10B series?

Yes. Franklin Water Treatment Canada acquired the Waterite and Excelpure product lines. The FWPS Big Blue cartridge replaces the former Excelpure PP10B series with identical performance and specifications. FWPS10B01 replaces PP10B01, FWPS10B05 replaces PP10B05, and so on. Updated packaging, same cartridge.

Which micron rating should I choose for my system?

5 micron is the most common choice for whole house sediment filter replacement on municipal or well water. 1 micron provides the finest filtration and is typically used ahead of RO membranes or where high water clarity is required. 20 or 50 micron works as a first-stage pre-filter in heavy-sediment water to protect finer downstream cartridges or equipment from premature loading. If uncertain, start with 5 micron and adjust based on how quickly the cartridge loads and how clean your downstream filters stay.
