Description

Heat Trace Cable, Steam Thawers, and Pulse Jet De-Icers for Frozen Water and Drain Lines

Frozen pipes burst, flood buildings, and shut down water service for hours or days. A single burst costs thousands in damage and lost productivity. A frozen water line that goes unaddressed can take an entire building offline.

Cleanflow carries a complete line of pipe de-icing equipment that covers three approaches to the problem: prevention with heat trace cable, emergency thawing with steam, and active de-icing with pulse jet machines. All winter pipe equipment ships across Canada and the United States with free shipping on orders over $199.

What's in Stock

Three approaches to frozen pipe problems:

Frozen Pipe Thawing Equipment by Approach

Pipe Freeze Protection Cable

The most effective strategy is prevention. Self-regulating heat trace cable wraps around the pipe, senses the temperature, and increases output as conditions get colder.

  • King 120V Pre-Assembled Heating Cable. Plug-in installation, ETL certified, rated to -40F. Available in lengths from 6 to 150 feet for residential, commercial, and agricultural water lines. The entry point for pipe freeze protection.
  • PYRO FPC Freeze Protection Controller. Manages up to 30A of heat trace across multiple circuits. Adjustable temperature set points, LCD display, and GFEP ground fault protection for larger or multi-zone installations.

Connection kits, splice kits, and end seals are in stock for custom cable installations.

Steam Thawing Machines

When pipes have already frozen, steam is the fastest field method.

  • Arctic Blaster Steam Thawer. Propane-powered, runs without electricity. Heats 2 gallons of water to 230F and pushes steam through 50-foot hoses to thaw frozen lines, culverts, septic systems, and catch basins. A portable pipe thawing machine built for emergency calls at off-grid sites.
  • Replacement Steam Hose Assemblies. Extend reach to 75 or 100 feet with wire-reinforced nitrile rubber rated from -40F to 212F. Quick-connect fittings for fast field swaps.

For direct-heat work on exposed pipes and fittings:

  • Propane Torch Kit. 220,000 BTU cast iron head with 15 feet of hose. CSA certified. For thawing exposed pipes, melting ice around valves, and other direct-heat work on accessible fittings.

Water Service Line De-Icers

Pulse jet de-icers clear frozen water service lines from the meter pit to the building. The machine feeds heated water through flexible tubing at controlled pressure, melting the ice plug from the outside in. Unlike electric thawers, pulse jet de-icers work safely on both metal and plastic pipes and are the standard frozen pipe thawing equipment for modern PEX and HDPE service connections.

Replacement probe tips, feeder assemblies, and immersion heaters are in stock.

How to Choose

  1. Pipes you can reach before winter. Install heat trace cable. Pipe freeze protection stops the problem before it starts.
  2. Frozen metal pipes (copper, galvanized, cast iron). Use a steam thawer like the Arctic Blaster.
  3. Frozen plastic pipes (PEX, HDPE, PVC). Use a pulse jet de-icer like the Magikist PJDX-C. Steam also works on plastic.
  4. Frozen water service lines (any material). Use a pulse jet de-icer. The tubing self-feeds from the meter pit up to 200+ feet.
  5. Culverts, septic lines, and catch basins. Use a steam thawer for larger-diameter applications.
  6. Line inspection after thawing. A pipe inspection camera confirms the line is clear and checks for damage from the freeze.

Pipe de-icing equipment falls into two broad groups: prevention and remediation. For a deeper comparison, read our guide on how to choose a pipe thawing machine.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you thaw frozen pipes underground?

For underground frozen water lines, use a pulse jet de-icer like the Magikist PJDX-C. Feed the heated tubing through the service line from the meter pit or access point. The warm water melts the ice plug from the inside. Steam thawers work for larger underground lines like culverts and septic runs.

What is the difference between pipe freeze protection and pipe thawing equipment?

Pipe freeze protection prevents ice from forming. Heat trace cable runs continuously or activates on temperature to keep pipe temperature above freezing. Pipe thawing equipment melts ice that has already formed, using steam or pressurized heated water. Prevention installs before winter. Thawing responds to emergencies.

Can you thaw frozen plastic pipes with a pipe thawing machine?

Yes, but not with an electric thawer. Electric thawing machines only work on metal pipes because they pass current through the pipe wall. Steam thawers (Arctic Blaster) and pulse jet de-icers (Magikist PJDX-C) both work safely on PEX, HDPE, PVC, and other plastic pipes.

What equipment do plumbers use to thaw frozen pipes?

Professional plumbers and municipal crews use three types of frozen pipe thawing equipment: heat trace cable for prevention, steam thawers for emergency field work on larger lines, and pulse jet de-icers for frozen water service lines. The choice depends on pipe material, diameter, and accessibility.

Can I install heat trace cable myself or do I need an electrician?

Pre-assembled heat trace cable like the King 120V plugs into a standard outlet and wraps around the pipe. No electrician needed for basic installations. Bulk coil cable, splice connections, and multi-zone systems with the PYRO FPC controller should be wired by a licensed electrician to meet local electrical codes.
